What Moved Today

Market Recap — Strong June core capital-goods orders and a big jump in shipments pushed growth expectations and lifted the dollar and yields ($DX=F, $ZN=F). Equity sentiment stayed positive into the close ahead of a heavy after-hours tech and industrial earnings slate including beats from Cadence ($CDNS) and Amkor ($AMKR). Data-center and AI-related results from Applied Digital ($APLD) also surprised on revenue, while Nucor ($NUE) and F5 ($FFIV) topped estimates, keeping cyclicals supported. Late news that Johnson & Johnson reached a USD 5.5bn talc settlement added a firming legal-resolution datapoint ($JNJ).

Intraday — Morning durable-goods showed nondefense core capital orders +0.9% and core shipments +1.9%, outperforming expectations and signaling stronger business investment; that filtered into a firmer dollar and higher Treasury yields ($DX=F, $ZN=F) and helped cyclical stocks outperform into the afternoon.

After Hours — Post-close reports skewed positive: Amkor posted a beat and raised capex outlook ($AMKR), Cadence beat and raised FY revenue and EPS guidance on AI-chip design demand ($CDNS), Applied Digital reported outsized revenue from AI data-center leasing ($APLD), F5 and Nucor also topped estimates and lifted guidance or margins ($FFIV, $NUE), while the J&J talc settlement cleared most legacy claims ($JNJ).

Our Read — Strong equipment orders plus AI-related earnings set a two-way market: growth-sensitive cyclicals can extend gains if guidance holds, while yields and the dollar will cap tech multiple expansion. Watch tomorrow’s AI/semiconductor guidance for directional follow-through.
